Search “Shopify developer” and you’ll find thousands of agencies and freelancers calling themselves Shopify Partners. Some are excellent. Some install a theme, add twenty apps and disappear. Here’s how to tell the difference.

What “Shopify Partner” actually means

Anyone can join the Shopify Partner Program for free. It gives developers development stores, the ability to build apps, and a way to transfer store ownership to clients. So “Shopify Partner” means someone is registered — not that they’ve been vetted.

The Shopify Partner Directory is different: it’s Shopify’s public marketplace of service partners, organised into tiers — Registered, Plus, Premier and Platinum. Higher tiers are earned mostly through commercial impact (merchant revenue and the number of merchants a partner has brought to Shopify), and Plus-and-above partners are guaranteed directory listings. A limited number of Registered partners are also listed.

That makes tiers a useful signal of scale, but not of fit. A Platinum agency may be perfect for a global brand and wrong for a growing retailer with two shops and a warehouse. A newer partner may be the one who has actually built the integrations you need.

The 10 questions to ask any Shopify partner

  1. “Will we own the theme and any custom app code?” The answer should be an unconditional yes, in a Git repository.
  2. “How will you structure our catalogue?” Listen for product types, variants, metafields and collections — not just “we’ll import your CSV”.
  3. “How will our physical shop stock stay in sync?” If you sell in person, this is the question that matters most. Good answers mention locations, relative adjustments and a stock ledger.
  4. “Which apps will we need, and what will they cost monthly?” Every app adds cost and page weight. A good partner removes apps.
  5. “How do you protect our SEO during migration?” Expect a 301 redirect map, preserved metadata and post-launch monitoring in Search Console.
  6. “What will our Core Web Vitals be?” Ask for before/after measurements on mobile.
  7. “Can you integrate with our accounting, couriers and ERP?” Ask how they handle failures, retries and Shopify API rate limits.
  8. “Who will actually do the work?” Know whether it’s the people you met or a sub-contractor.
  9. “What happens after launch?” Support terms, response times and costs in writing.
  10. “Can I speak to a client — or see a system you run in production?” Real work beats portfolio screenshots.

Red flags

  • A quote without a discovery conversation.
  • No mention of inventory, fulfilment or data — only design.
  • Theme or app code that stays on the agency’s account.
  • Guaranteed rankings or “instant” migrations.
